Follow in the footsteps of our literary greats

East Hampshire residents can now walk in the footsteps of the district’s literary greats ahead of the Creative Footsteps festival in October. Self-guided walks in locations throughout the district can be found through the East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) website and they’re a great opportunity to learn more about the district’s beautiful open spaces and rural hamlets which have provided inspiration to writers and naturalists for generations. To celebrate the literary heritage of East Hampshire, and the beautiful scenery that inspired it, the visitor attractions of East Hampshire have come together to form a literary festival, which will take place from 2 to 10 October 2021. The programme of events will range from talks and workshops at venues such as The Allen Gallery, The Petersfield Museum, Chawton House, Jane Austen’s House Museum and Gilbert White’s House and Gardens.

The programme of events is being developed and will be added to the council website shortly. Find out more about Creative Footsteps

Councillor Ken Moon, EHDC portfolio holder for Economic Development, said: “East Hampshire has been blessed with beautiful landscapes and a diverse natural environment which has been the source of inspiration for so many creative people over the years. “In a normal year, people from all over the world would be travelling to East Hampshire to see where Jane Austen lived. While some international tourists are returning, it is a long way from the level it would have been in previous years. “Now is a great time for local people to get out and explore the area they live in, and the museums, galleries and other attractions in the district need their support.” Creative Footsteps and the Welcome Back campaign are brought to you by East Hampshire District Council with funding from the European Regional Development Fund and the government.
